Ramgarh, June 9: The Devnad-Damodar River Pollution Review Yatra 2022 was organized on the occasion of World Environment Day from June 6 to June 9.
The campaign started under the leadership of Jamshedpur MLA Saryu Roy. He along with other officials reached the bank of Damodar River and reviewed the filth lying there. A water sample was also taken for testing the quality.
Roy visited Ramgarh, Bokaro Thermal Power Station, Tenughat Thermal Power Station and inspected the ash pound and held a meeting with the officials.
The team also reached Rajrappa’s Maa Chhinnamastika temple area in the Ramgarh district. It took stock of the condition of the Damodar River.
Then the team reached the Ramgarh Cantonment Board office where a meeting was organized under the chairmanship of MS Hari Vijay, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Cantonment Board at Ramgarh Cantonment Board office.
MLA Saryu Roy said, “This campaign was started in 2004. Over the years, we have tried our best to save Damodar from getting polluted and we did get a lot of success. Earlier, the dirt of factories, coal washeries, and power plants used to drain into the river due to which it was polluted. But now the situation has improved a lot.”
“The filth of factories is no longer falling in the Damodar River. Power plants and coal basins have also almost stopped dumping the garbage. But urban filth is still being dumped in it. It is necessary to try to stop this,” Roy added.
On this, the CEO of Ramgarh Cantonment Board assured that he would take immediate steps in this direction and a survey will be conducted on this soon.
The CEO said, “Earlier the condition of Damodar River was not good but it has improved a lot now. The only thing now is to stop the urban filth. From Dhanbad to Ramgarh, urban filth is being dumped in Damodar. Due to this, the river is not getting pollution-free.”
“Work will be done to stop the dumping of urban filth into the Damodar. After talking to the Jharkhand government in this regard, we will move forward in the direction of action,” the CEO added.
Apart from MLA Saryu Roy, Convener Dr MK Jamuar, Co-Convener Ashish Sheetal Munda, BJP leader Prof. Sanjay Singh and others were present on the occasion.
