Dhanbad, Feb 16: A four-member team of Bokaro police clad in civil dress was beaten up in Dhanbad for arresting a wrong person by mistake.
One of the injured police personnel was admitted to Shahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College Hospital (SNMMCH) Dhanbad for treatment.
The police official said that the incident occurred the previous night (around 8 .30 p.m.) when the team of Bokaro Benagaria police station under officer-in-charge Suman Kumar reached Dhanbad’s Manaitand Kumaharpatti to arrest Mistri Saab, an accused of battery theft. But they picked up one Pradip Chourasia in confusion.
After taking Pradip in possession, they reportedly began beating him. When he protested, the officials brandished a pistol on him.
Since the team members were in civil dress, the family members of Pradip Chourasia and residents of Kumharpatti, construing them as kidnappers, attacked them and rescued him.
Having seen the irate mob, the police personnel fled from the spot but one of them, identified as Sitaram Das, fell in drainage and was injured.
After getting the information, Dhansar police reached the spot and rescued Bokaro police members. Additional Superintendent of Police Manoj Swargyari also reached Dhansar police station and took details of the incident. Sources said that the entire incident was captured in a CCTV camera.
Dhansar police officer Ankita Sahu said that Bokaro police were in civil dress and had gone to arrest an accused without informing the concerned Dhansar police station.
“There is a report of the clash between Bokaro police team members and residents. The matter is being investigated,” she said.
Pradip Chourasia’s sister-in-law Sweety Chourasia has filed a complaint in Dhansar police station against the Bokaro police personnel for assaulting her.
