New Delhi, Jan 24: Union Home Minister Amit Shah today hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s schemes encouraging people to adopt girls as a mark of pride, which resulted in a “mass campaign” and “revolutionised the sex ratio.”

The words from the home minister came as the country commemorated National Girl Child Day today.

Taking to Twitter, Amit Shah said: “Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed people to adopt daughters as a symbol of pride and self-respect across the country through various schemes like ‘Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao’ after becoming PM. As a result of his efforts, the move turned into a mass campaign and revolutionized the sex ratio.”

On January 22, 2015, the central government introduced the ‘Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao’ scheme to solve major challenges surrounding female empowerment in the country.

The move by the central government had an impact on the gender ratio, with the latest round of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS 2019-21) reporting that India had 1,020 females for every 1,000 males.

According to NFHS 2019-2021, India has made significant progress in the last five years as in 2015-16, the sex ratio was just 991.

The home minister added, “Prime minister Narendra Modiji changed the thinking of women’s development into the resolve of women-led development and opened the doors of opportunities”.

“Today the daughters of the country are illuminating the name of India in every field. On ‘National Girl Child Day’, I convey my best wishes to every daughter of India, the pride of the country,” the Home Minister said.

On National Girl Child Day, which is observed on January 24 every year, a number of Union ministers and officials wished the country well. Shah, Smriti Irani, Nitin Gadkari, Jyotiraditya Scindia, and Hardeep Puri, among others, tweeted their best wishes.

In 2008, the Centre established January 24 as National Girl Child Day, with the goal of enhancing societal awareness of the girl child so that she is loved and respected.

This day is commemorated to raise awareness of women’s rights in the country. The occasion is also commemorated in order to increase public awareness of inequality, discrimination, and exploitation that girls suffer in society. It is commemorated by a variety of activities, including public awareness campaigns aimed at fostering a healthy and secure environment for females.
