New Delhi: The investigation into the alleged NEET UG 2026 paper leak has intensified significantly, with agencies narrowing their focus to around 20 key suspects from an initial pool of nearly 150 individuals, as the CBI takes charge of the case.

How the Leak Was Discovered

NTA Director General Abhishek Singh confirmed that the agency received information through a whistleblower on the night of May 7 about a WhatsApp message allegedly containing questions matching the actual NEET UG 2026 paper. Verification revealed that some questions did indeed match the exam paper, and further investigation found the PDF containing those questions was available on phones of certain individuals on May 1 and May 2 — two days before the exam was conducted on May 3.

CBI Now Leading the Probe

The NTA has handed over the matter to the CBI. Singh stated that strict action will be taken against all accused to protect the future of honest students, adding that all those found guilty will be identified and jailed. Authorities are analysing digital records and communication trails to trace how the leaked material circulated.

Re-Examination Announced at No Extra Cost

The NTA has announced that a re-examination will be held for affected students in a fair and transparent manner, with no additional fee charged. Students who paid fees for the earlier examination will also receive refunds, with the agency stating the decision was taken to maintain the credibility of the examination process.
