Jerusalem: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has sharply criticized the Australian government following a deadly shooting at a Jewish celebration in Sydney that left 11 people dead. In a public address, he accused Canberra of contributing to rising antisemitism by recognizing Palestinian statehood earlier this year.

Netanyahu Says Australia’s Policy “Poured Oil on the Fire”

Netanyahu referenced a letter he sent to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese in August, warning that the decision to back Palestinian statehood would intensify antisemitic sentiment. “Three months ago I wrote to the Australian prime minister that your policy is pouring oil on the fire of antisemitism,” he said, addressing supporters in southern Israel.

“Antisemitism Is a Cancer,” Netanyahu Warns After Fatal Beach Attack

The Israeli leader condemned the Sydney shooting and emphasized the responsibility of world leaders to act decisively against hate. “Antisemitism is a cancer that spreads when leaders are silent and do not act,” he said. His remarks follow widespread shock in Australia after the attack targeting a Jewish gathering on a Sydney beach.
