New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has begun a crucial interrogation of Tahawwur Hussain Rana, extradited from the United States for his role in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks. Initial findings from the probe have exposed Rana’s long-standing ties with Pakistan’s military and terror networks.
Strong Military Background And Pakistan Army Obsession
As per NIA sources, Rana hails from Chichawatni, Pakistan, and comes from a family closely linked with the Pakistani establishment. One of his brothers serves as a psychiatrist in the Pakistan army. Rana himself was a former medical officer in the army but is said to have frequently worn military uniforms even after leaving service, particularly while meeting ISI officials and terror operatives.
Immigration Business Used As A Terror Cover
After migrating to Canada in 1997, Rana started an immigration consultancy — which the NIA believes was used as a cover for terror activities. This business allowed his associate David Headley to travel between countries and plan attacks under the guise of legitimate travel.
Direct Links With Global Terrorist Sajid Mir
Investigators confirmed that Rana was in regular contact with Sajid Mir — a Lashkar-e-Taiba operative wanted globally and accused of handling the 26/11 Mumbai attackers. Mir played a critical role in directing the attacks, especially at Chabad House.
Frequent Meetings With ISI Handler Major Iqbal
The NIA probe has also revealed that Rana met with ISI officer Major Iqbal multiple times. Major Iqbal is alleged to have financed and directed David Headley’s operations in India. He also guided reconnaissance missions for the Mumbai attacks.
Dubai Meeting With Key Suspect Before 26/11
Sources also said that Rana met an unidentified figure in Dubai who had prior knowledge of the Mumbai terror attacks. The NIA is now actively working to identify this individual, who is believed to have been an important part of the 26/11 conspiracy.
High-Security Interrogation Underway In Delhi
Rana is currently held under tight security at the NIA headquarters in Delhi. His interrogation is being led by senior NIA officials — DIG Jaya Roy and IG Ashish Batra — both from the Jharkhand cadre of IPS. These officers were instrumental in bringing Rana back to India after his extradition from the US.
Rana Remains Uncooperative During Interrogation
Sources indicate that despite being confronted with strong evidence, Rana is offering limited information during his interrogation. However, the NIA remains confident of extracting more details regarding his terror network and future plans.
