Hyderabad: A tragic stampede at the Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Kasibugga, Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh claimed the lives of at least nine devotees — most of them women and children — during heavy rush on the occasion of Ekadashi. Disturbing visuals from the temple showed massive overcrowding on the stairway as hundreds of worshippers struggled to escape the crush.
Panic and Chaos at Temple Premises
The stampede broke out when devotees gathered in large numbers to offer prayers, leading to a sudden surge near the temple’s staircase. Several people fell and were trampled in the chaos. Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as screams filled the air and puja baskets scattered across the floor. Police later rushed to the spot, restoring order and beginning rescue operations.
Chief Minister Naidu Expresses Shock
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep sorrow over the incident, calling it “heartbreaking.” He extended condolences to the victims’ families and directed officials to ensure urgent medical care for the injured. “The stampede at the Venkateswara Temple in Srikakulam has caused great distress. I have instructed authorities to provide speedy and proper treatment to the injured,” Naidu said.
Government Response and Relief Efforts
State minister Nara Lokesh said he was in “profound shock” and assured that the government is providing the best possible treatment to the victims. He added that he has spoken with local authorities to oversee relief measures and support for the bereaved families. Officials and public representatives have been asked to remain at the site to coordinate aid distribution and medical response.
