New Delhi, Jan 1: In a stampede that occurred on Sunday in a mall in Uganda, at least nine people died. When the stampede happened, people were gathered at Kampala’s Freedom City mall for New Year’s celebration.
There was a stampede when people hurried outdoors at midnight to witness the fireworks display, according to local media accounts.
Five people died instantly and many others were injured in a stampede that broke out after the performance, a Kampala police official was reported by AFP as saying.
In a tweet, Uganda Police Force said, ‘The Katwe Territorial Police are investigating an incident of rash and neglect that occurred at a New Year’s Eve event at the Freedom City Mall Namasuba and resulted in the deaths of nine people, including several juveniles.”
