New Delhi, Dec 16: The Supreme Court will not have a vacation bench during the upcoming winter break, according to Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud.
This is consistent with custom, as vacation benches are often only created for the longer summer holiday in May and June, not the shorter winter break in December.
“There will be no benches available from tomorrow till the January 2, 2023,” the CJI said.
The winter vacation is for two weeks starting from December 19 with the Court resuming on January 2.
The CJI’s comments, though, come after the Union Law Minister made fun of the judiciary for taking protracted court holidays.
“There is a feeling among people of India that the long vacation which the courts obtain is not very convenient for justice-seekers and it is my obligation and duty to convey the message or sense of this House to the judiciary,” the Law Minister had said in parliament on Thursday as per the media reports.
The courts’ extended vacations have sometimes drawn criticism. Even now, a petition opposing such protracted court recesses has been filed with the Bombay High Court.
