New Delhi, April 12: Nokia’s CEO said that the company is exiting the Russian market, going farther than rival Ericsson, which said on Monday that it was stopping operations in the country indefinitely, according to Reuters.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24 and the imposition of Western sanctions on Moscow, hundreds of global corporations have severed connections with the country.
While certain industries, notably telecommunications, have been exempted from some restrictions due to humanitarian or other reasons, Nokia Nokia said it had decided that quitting Russia was the only option.
“We just simply do not see any possibilities to continue in the country under the current circumstances,” CEO Pekka Lundmark said in an interview.
“Nokia would continue to support customers during its exit, and it was not possible to say at this stage how long the withdrawal would take,” he added.
According to Lundmark, Nokia’s decision to leave Russia will affect about 2,000 workers, and some of them might be offered work in other parts of the world. Notably, Nokia has about 90,000 employees globally.
