Seoul, Oct. 4: Seoul announced on Monday that for the first time in months, communication links between North and South Korea have been reconnected. The reopening comes after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un promised last week in an address to the country’s rubber-stamp legislature to reestablish dialogue.

Kim remarked at the time, “North Korea has no reasons to provoke or hurt the South.”

North Korea responded on the joint line on Monday morning, according to South Korea’s Unification Ministry. The South Korean Defense Ministry stated that the two militaries have also reestablished their hotline along the east and west coasts.

The ministry said in a note to reporters that it hoped that better communication would help to alleviate tensions on the peninsula.

Communication between the two countries has long been a source of contention, particularly between the presidential offices, militaries, and espionage services.

North Korea withdrew from ongoing talks in June 2020, expressing dissatisfaction with propaganda leaflets activists were pouring across the border. North Korea reopened communication links briefly in July, only to shut them again two weeks later.

North Korean state media reported, “South Korean authorities must deeply appreciate the meaning of resumption of North-South communication lines and repair the North-South relations and make active efforts to resolve important issues that are prerequisites to opening a bright path forward”.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in during his address to the United Nations General Assembly last month, suggested that the two Koreas with the US, or the two Koreas with the US and China, ” declare that the war on the Korean Peninsula is over.”
