Shillong, March 3: Conrad K. Sangma, the leader of the NPP, met with Phagu Chauhan, the governor of Meghalaya, on Friday and asserted his right to form the state’s government.

The outgoing chief minister, Sangma, asserted that he has a “absolute majority with 32 MLAs” in the 60-member house but declined to identify the parties that back him.

Addressing a press conference before going to Raj Bhawan, Sangma said, “We have an absolute majority. The BJP has already extended its support. Some others have also given their support.”

After winning 26 of the 59 seats up for election in the 59 constituencies in Meghalaya on February 27, the NPP became the single-largest party in the state on Thursday.

The NPP’s coalition partner in the Conrad K. Sangma administration, the UDP, came in second place with 11 constituencies won. In the 2018 elections, it has only garnered six seats. The BJP won two seats, while the Congress and the Mamata Banerjee-led TMC each gained five.

The People’s Democratic Front and the Hill State People’s Democratic Party both won two seats, while the newly founded Voice of the People Party (VPP) got four seats. Moreover, two Independent candidates were successful.
