Rajmahal, Oct.8: Kahalgaon and Farakka, two of the country’s biggest NTPCs, now have only one day’s coal left. At present, only 4 rakes of coal are being supplied from ECL’s Rajmahal coal project, Lalmatia instead of 10 rakes. Due to this, Kahalgaon is getting a supply of 3 rakes while just 1 rake of coal is being supplied to Farakka. This has led to heavy shortage of coal in both the NTPCs.

Rajmahal coal mine is one of the largest coal mines in the region and the source of fuel for two big thermal power units — Farakka (2,100 Mw) in West Bengal and Kahalgaon (2,340 Mw) in Bihar.

But the production from this mine has been less for two consecutive years. It is said that despite the land acquisition in the Taljhari village, mining work has not been started due to the opposition of the villagers.

Due to the paucity of land, the production of coal in the Rajmahal coal project has come down to 10 thousand tonnes per day. Whereas earlier the production used to be 60 thousand tonnes every day. Because of this, only 10 to 12 thousand tonnes of coal are being supplied every day to Kahalgaon and Farakka NTPC.

Due to less supply of coal, the condition of both thermal power projects has worsened. In the Rajmahal project, the director and technical heads of the headquarters are keeping an eye on it. Efforts are being made to overcome the land crisis. The general manager-in-charge of the project, Devendra Kumar Nayak and the project officials are engaged in getting rid of the land problem.
