Odisha: Chargesheet filed against accused in Naba Das murder case

Jharsuguda, May 26: The Crime Branch of the Crime Investigation Department (CB-CID), Odisha on Friday filed a preliminary chargesheet against dismissed Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Gopal Das, who was charged with murdering the previous health minister Naba Das.

The remand attorney Dayandihi Chand said, the crime branch filed a 544-chargesheet at the Jharsuguda district court against the dismissed ASI Gopal Das in connection with the high-profile murder which happened on January 29 this year.

In Jharsuguda’s Brajarajnagar on January 29, Gopal Das killed Naba Das, according to the chargesheet. The accused fired on the chest of the minister from a very close range,” read the chargesheet.

According to the chargesheet, the accused is charged under the Arms Act’s Sections 307, 302, and 27 (1), Chand stated.

Following the murder, the police immediately detained the suspect Gopal Das on the spot.

On Thursday, after travelling from Bhubaneswar, the Crime Branch team arrived in Jharsuguda to present the chargesheet.

Chand added that according to the chargesheet, 89 different witness statements were taken over the course of the inquiry against the accused Gopal Das.

Since 2019, Naba Das has served as Odisha’s Minister of Health and Family Welfare. He represented the Jharsuguda electorate as an MLA three times, and he was regarded as an influential figure in the area.

Minister Naba Das was shot in Brajarajnagar in the Jharsuguda district and passed away from his wounds in the hospital in Bhubaneswar.
