New Delhi, Jan 29: Naba Das, the minister of health for the state of Odisha, was airlifted to Bhubaneswar on Sunday after being fired at by a police officer near Brajarajnagar in the Jharsuguda district.

From the airport in Bhubaneswar, an ambulance headed toward a private hospital with State Health Minister Naba Das inside.

While at Apollo Hospital, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik spoke with the Health Secretary and other officials.

An earlier eyewitness, attorney Ram Mohan Rao, claimed that the policeman opened fire at the Odisha minister while he was in close proximity.

“This incident occurred at about 12.30 afternoon at Gandhi chowk when Das was on his way to attend a programme. He sustained bullet injuries to his left chest, leaving him seriously injured,” Rao said.

“At a public grievance office opening, Naba Das was the chief guest. When he arrived, crowd gathered to welcome him. Suddenly, a gunshot was heard. We saw a police personnel running away after shooting from close range. Minister to be air lifted to Bhubaneswar,” he added.

The reason behind the firing is still unclear.
