Bhubaneswar, Jan 2: Odisha reported 23 fresh cases of Omicron variant of coronavirus on Sunday, taking the total tally to 31 in the state, an official informed on Sunday.
“23 new cases of Omicron detected in Odisha, the total number of cases with new variant has reached 37 in State,” said Niranjan Mishra, Director, Public Health.

As per the State Health Department, all the samples were sent for genome sequencing at the Institute Of Life Sciences (ILS), Bhubaneswar.
Meanwhile, Odisha reported 424 new Covid infections on Sunday, the most in over two months, bringing the total caseload to 10,55,556.
A 75-year-old woman from Bhubaneswar died of the illness in Khurda district, bringing the total to 8,463. In the past, 53 additional Covid-19 patients have died as a result of comorbidities.
Khurda, had the most new cases with 177, followed by Cuttack with 45. Sixty-seven children are among those who have been diagnosed with the condition for the first time. Odisha has 2,078 active cases, with 10,44,962 people recovering, including 59 in the last 24 hours.
Meanwhile, the Odisha government has chosen to postpone its plan to reopen schools due to an increase in Covid-19 and Omicron variant cases. Earlier, the state government announced to reopen schools for students of Classes 1 to 5 from January 3, 2022.
