Balasore, June 4: The disaster that resulted in the deaths of 288 passengers was caused by a change in electronic interlocking, according to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who on Sunday inspected the restoration efforts at the scene of the Balasore triple train collision.

Over 1,000 people have been injured, and 288 people have died as a result of the Balasore train tragedy, which involved two passenger trains and a goods train.

According to Ashwini Vaishnaw, the commissioner of railway safety has looked into the situation and determined what caused the event and who was to blame for it.

“The commissioner of railway safety has investigated the matter and let the investigation report come but we have identified the cause of the incident and the people responsible for it… It happened due to a change in electronic interlocking,” Vaishnaw stated.

The Railway Minister added that the restoration is the current priority and that the goal is to complete the job by Wednesday morning.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi inspected the site yesterday. We will try to restore the track today. All bodies have been removed. Our target is to finish the restoration work by Wednesday morning so that trains can start running on this track,” Vaishnaw added.

The repair work in Balasore, Odisha, was underway on a war footing, according to information provided earlier on Saturday by the Railways Ministry.

The Ministry of Railways stated in a tweet that officials are monitoring closely the accident site’s restoration efforts. “Restoration work is ongoing at Warfooting at the train accident site in Balasore, Odisha with 1000+ Manpower working tirelessly. At present, more than 7 Poclain Machines, 2 Accident Relief Trains, and 3-4 Railway and Road Cranes have been deployed for early restoration. Officials are closely monitoring the restoration process at the accident site,” read the post on the official Twitter handle of the Railways ministry.

For the evacuation of the dead and injured, the Indian Air Force (IAF) sent out Mi-17 helicopters. The IAF worked with the government and Indian Railways to coordinate the rescue operations, according to the Eastern Command.

The Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express, the Coromandel Express, and a goods train were all involved in the three-way accident at Bahanaga Bazar Station in the Balasore district, according to the preliminary report on the disaster.

The accident on Friday night resulted in the derailment and significant damage of up to 17 coaches from these two passenger trains.
