Mumbai, June 25: Teesta Setalvad, a Mumbai-based activist, was deatined and taken to the Santacruz police station by the Gujarat anti-terrorist squad (ATS) on Saturday.
Amit Shah, the Union Home Minister, accused Setalvad of providing the police with false information on the riots in Gujarat in 2002 in an interview with the news agency ANI.
On Friday, the Supreme Court rejected claims of a “bigger conspiracy” made by Zakia Jafri in a petition contesting the SIT’s clearance of then-state chief minister Narendra Modi and others in riot-related matters. Zakia is the spouse of deceased riot victim and former Congressman Ehsan Jafri.
On Saturday, Amit Shah claimed that an NGO in Setalvad had filed police station complaints against BJP activists and that these were investigated for the truth. He stated, “Teesta Setalvad’s NGO was carrying out this.”
