Ranchi, Feb 24: In a first-of-its-kind, Orchid Medical Centre in Ranchi treated a 79-year-old lady through microscopic surgery that was brought to the hospital in an unconscious state suffering from brain aneurysms (weakness in the arteries of the brain).

Dr. Vikram Singh, consultant neurosurgeon said that the lady was brought to the hospital in an unconscious state. After an investigation, she was detected to have a type of brain aneurysm which had ruptured and caused bleeding.

“Surgery for the aneurysm was done by clipping the area through microscopic surgery which needs very fine instruments. After surgery, the patient was put on the ventilator and gradual recovery in status was noted. At present, the patient is conscious and has recovered from the disease and is ready to go home,” Dr. Singh said.

“The lady was admitted on January 24, after which the treatment was going on and the total cost of the surgery including the stay and everything was around Rs 13-14 lakhs,” Dr. Singh added.

Explaining the disease Dr. P K Gupta, Chief Executive Officer said that brain aneurysms are a weakness in the arteries of the brain that swell and fill with blood.

“When such aneurysms rupture, it can lead to life-threatening bleeding called a subarachnoid haemorrhage. Cases of poor-grade subarachnoid haemorrhage carry a mortality rate of 50-70 percent. The outcomes are even worse in elderly patients. Most such patients seek treatment in metro cities, leading to loss of valuable time for the patient,” Dr. Gupta said.

On the question of why such a type of disease arises in a patient, Dr. Gupta said that a person having high blood pressure and diabetes has higher chances of such type of disease. In terms of genetic factors responsible for such a type of disease, the research is still going on to understand the reasons associated with it.
