New Delhi: AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has launched a sharp attack on Delhi Police for their handling of the Supreme Court shoe-throwing incident, alleging bias and leniency towards the accused, 72-year-old lawyer Rakesh Kishore. Owaisi suggested that if the accused had been named “Asad” instead of “Rakesh”, the response from the authorities would have been far more severe.
Owaisi Questions Double Standards
Speaking on Wednesday, Owaisi said, “Delhi Police did not arrest the accused because his name is Rakesh Kishore. If his name was not Rakesh but ‘Asad’, what would Delhi Police have done?” He questioned why no stringent charges, including UAPA, were invoked against Kishore, who hurled a shoe at Chief Justice of India BR Gavai inside the courtroom while shouting slogans about Sanatan Dharma.
Owaisi also highlighted the caste identity of the Chief Justice, pointing out that “a man threw a shoe at a Dalit Chief Justice in his own court” and asked, “How did he get the courage to do this?”
Incident Sparks Political and Religious Debate
The attack occurred after the Chief Justice made a remark during a case concerning the reconstruction of a Lord Vishnu idol, advising the petitioner to “go and ask the deity himself to do something,” as the court could not intervene. The comment was amplified online and misrepresented, triggering outrage from right-wing groups. Kishore later claimed that his act was commanded by God and that he had no regrets.
The shoe did not hit the Chief Justice and Kishore was quickly detained. However, he was released without charges, and even his shoe was returned—after CJI Gavai instructed police not to take further action.
Owaisi linked this leniency to religious and political bias, accusing the BJP-led government of double standards in law enforcement. He referenced previous mosque-related court cases, stating, “…but we did not pick up the shoe.”
