Pakistan floods: Death toll crosses 1,000 mark as rainfall continues

Islamabad, Aug 28: Floods in Pakistan have claimed more than 1,000 lives, injured scores more, and forced thousands more to flee their homes.

Since June 14, the rains and floods have caused at least 1,033 fatalities and 1,527 injuries, according to Geo News, citing the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

On the previous day, 71 individuals were hurt while around 119 people perished.

According to the report, 76 people died in Sindh, 31 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, six in Gilgit Baltistan, and four in Balochistan. In total, 3,451.5 kilometres of road have been damaged, 149 bridges have collapsed, and 170 stores have been destroyed in Pakistan as of June 14.

949,858 dwellings in all have been demolished completely or partially. Out of the total, 287,412 dwellings have been completely destroyed, while 662,446 homes have suffered partial damage. Additionally, 719,558 animals have died.

According to Geo News, the floods have affected at least 110 districts in Pakistan, with 72 of those districts reporting a calamity situation.

According to the most recent NDMA survey, 5,773,063 persons have been impacted by the flooding. It was made clear that the statistics in today’s report were based on verified data, although estimations indicated that more than 33 million people had been impacted by the flooding.

According to the administration, 51,275 people have been saved, while 498,442 have been relocated to relief camps. According to the NDMA, Pakistan has had 388.7mm of rain this year, compared to a 30-year normal of 134mm. 190.07% over average, on average.

The Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) warned on August 26 that very high to exceptionally high-level flooding is anticipated in the Kabul River at Nowshera in the KP province as well as in tributaries of the Kabul and Indus rivers till August 28.
