Daltonganj, April 15: The police in a late evening check on NH 75 on Friday, had a surprise recovery. There was a tip-off about a truck to SP Chandan Kumar Sinha. Under the directive of the SP, a small police team was deployed on NH 75 and it had its luck that evening.
It was 700 kgs of poppy straw concealed in 300 empty cold drink crates. The Sadar police led by Assistant Superintendent of Police and SDPO Rishabha Garg and OC Sadar police station Gautam Kumar recovered the 700 kgs of the poppy straw camouflaged amidst crates.
The police have seized the poppy straw and the 12-wheel truck.
It has arrested the owner of the truck Shahzad, 35 and the driver Faizan, 45 under the NDPS act who were remanded in judicial custody today, said Gautam Kumar.
Both the accused hail from Saharanpur district in UP. The 700 kgs of poppy straw were in 54 bags weighing differently from 12 kgs to 15 kgs, he added.
The truckload of poppy straw was en route to Muzaffarnagar in UP from Khunti in Jharkhand.
Gautam Kumar said, “The truck owner Shahzad has confessed to doing this illicit transport of poppy straw to pay the EMI of the truck which is a new one bought for him but now it stands seized under the NDPS act. Its release from the court of law would take enormous time”.
