Daltonganj, January 22: A 28-year-old mother Shanti Devi died by suicide along with her six-year-old son due to family distress at her small house at Rangiya under the police station of Manatu in Palamu late Saturday night.
Another 8-year-old son of Devi, who has survived the attempted suicide, informed the police on Sunday that his mother wrapped the sari around the necks of both the children, upon which, the surviving child enquired for the reason behind it.
After this, the child unwrapped the sari from his neck. Meanwhile, his mother hung herself along with the six-year-old, who died on spot. Later the 8-year-old opened the knots tied by Devi and slept beside the dead bodies, thinking that the duo had fallen asleep.
Officer in charge of the Manatu police station Kamlesh Kumar said that some villagers had informed the police about this tragedy.
Shanti Devi’s husband Vikas Das lives in Pune. He notably has another woman in his life. The police assume that this may have upset Shanti and led her to end her life along with the two children, said officer Kumar.
Police have registered a UD (unnatural death) case.
