Kolkata: The parents of the 31-year-old Kolkata doctor who was brutally raped and murdered last month have made serious allegations against the police, claiming they were offered a bribe to suppress the case. The murder, which occurred while the doctor was on a night shift at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has sparked widespread protests across West Bengal, with citizens demanding swift justice.

The grieving parents joined the ongoing protests at RG Kar Medical College, where their daughter’s body was discovered on August 9. During a demonstration, they accused the police of attempting to close the case without conducting a proper investigation.

“The police, from the very beginning, tried to hush up the case. We were not allowed to see the body and had to wait at the police station while the body was taken for post-mortem examinations,” the doctor’s father told the protesters. He further alleged, “Later, when the body was handed over to us, a senior police official offered us money, which we immediately declined.”

The parents have joined the protest to support the junior doctors who are fighting for justice for their daughter.

Kolkata Police have faced severe criticism from both the opposition and the public over their handling of the case. Many have questioned how the accused, Sanjoy Roy, was able to move freely around the state-run hospital at all hours. Reports have also suggested that Roy was involved in illegally arranging hospital beds and other facilities for patients in exchange for money.

Slogans targeting the police, reminding them of their duty and personal responsibilities, have been circulating on social media and prominently displayed on placards carried by protesters during street marches.

Amid the growing outrage, the Calcutta High Court has ordered that the investigation be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Following this order, the CBI arrested Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, on Monday in connection with alleged financial misconduct at the institution.

In response to the incident, the West Bengal Assembly passed a new anti-rape bill this week. The bill seeks capital punishment for rape convicts if their actions result in the victim’s death or leave her in a vegetative state, reflecting the public demand for stricter laws to protect women.
