Deoghar, June 18: A hand-cuffed accused of kidnapping was shot dead on Saturday in his lawyer’s chamber outside the Deoghar civil court patio while he was drinking tea with the counsel after appearing in the court.

The deceased has been identified as Amit Singh of Patna. He had a criminal background and was accused of several cases in Bihar and Jharkhand.

The occurrence took place just after he came out from the court of Additional Judge 3 Garima Mishra and sat in his lawyer’s open chamber outside the bar’s hall. Miscreants used pistols to commit the crime. They came all of a sudden before Singh and indiscriminately opened fire on him.

According to an eyewitness, Amit was shot dead by two shooters. After shooting Amit, they ran through the bar’s seating hall. One of the shooters fired in the air to disperse the mob.

In the chaos, they dropped their weapon on the ground that was seized by the police later. A country-made pistol, two kiosks, a pellet and a router were recovered from the spot.

Injured Amit was rushed to a government hospital where he was declared brought dead. There were two bullet injuries on his head and one on his chest.

As per sources, Amit was accused of kidnapping a Deoghar-based businessman Chanchal Kothari in 2012. For the last three years, he avoided appearing in the court but after legal pressure was mounted, he started to appear in court. It was his third appearance in the court today.

After the incident, DIG Santal Pargana Range Sudarshan Mandal along with Deoghar SP rushed to the spot and took account of the incident.

Even the Judiciary fraternity led by District Principal judge Diwakar Pandey came out of their chambers and took a round of the civil court ground to check the security arrangement.

Talking to the media, DIG Mandal admitted that it was a security lapse and assured to take appropriate steps to ensure the security around court premises.

The spot has been cordoned off and sealed and a team has been formed to arrest the criminals.

Ironically, there were four police personnel in the security of Amit. According to sources, the criminals fired at least six rounds of bullets but the police personnel did not bother to retaliate.

After the incident, the kin of the deceased was seen in the hospital but they avoided replying to the media.

A medical team of three doctors has been appointed to perform a post-mortem which includes Dr Kundan, Dr Ambrish Thakur and Dr Dewakar Paswan.

Meanwhile, the four security police personnel-ASI Ram Avtar, Manoj Kumar Sah, Mahesh Kumar and Taqbiz Khan were detained by the Deoghar Police.

After the incident, the advocate fraternity expressed concerns over the security lapses and said that the style of shooting suggests that the shooters were professional.
