New Delhi, Dec 11: Following the removal of former President Pedro Castillo, rallies seeking general elections in Peru resulted in the deaths of two teenagers and four injuries, according to police and local officials.

After Castillo was ousted by Congress and jailed for attempting to dissolve the legislature in an effort to thwart an impeachment vote against him, President Dina Boluarte was sworn in last week.

Demonstrators, many of whom are Castillo supporters, have been calling for Peru to hold elections for days in order to prevent Boluarte from remaining in office until Castillo’s term expires in 2026. Some demonstrators also demand the closure of Congress.

“Four injuries are reported, treated at the health center, three of them (with wounds) to the scalp, with multiple injuries,” Baltazar Lantaron, governor of the Apurimac region, told local television station Canal N.

The Andahuaylas airport has been closed as a result of attacks and acts of vandalism since last Saturday, according to the Peruvian Corporation of Airports and Commercial Aviation, which oversees the nation’s airports.

The transmitter room, which is essential for delivering navigation services, had been burned down by protesters, it was noted.

Two police officers were reportedly detained by demonstrators in Andahuaylas for hours before being freed, according to the ombudsman’s office on Saturday. Four police officers and 16 civilians were hurt during clashes on Saturday, the report claimed.
