Mumbai, May 6: Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president Raj Thackeray has been charged with sedition, breach of peace, and producing public annoyance, according to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in the Bombay High Court.

Thackeray should be barred from organising tours and press conferences linked to playing Hanuman Chalisa on loudspeakers, as well as from removing loudspeakers from mosques, according to the plea filed by RTI activist Hemant Patil.

Thackeray’s public meetings, where he reportedly offered derogatory statements against Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) head Sharad Pawar, were the subject of the complaint.

According to the petition, the words could lead to NCP employees protesting across Maharashtra, thus disrupting society’s harmony.

“Due to the said fact by the words spoken (by Thackeray), signs or by visible representation or otherwise brings, attempts to bring in hatred between Hindu and Muslim community at the instance of Thackeray,” the petition added.

The plea argued that since May 4, Raj Thackeray’s party workers have begun following what he has claimed, causing law and order issues, and that despite this, Thackeray has not been charged with sedition under Section 124A of the IPC.

Patil had addressed a representation to the Commissioner and Senior Inspector of Azad Maidan Police Station, demanding start of action, according to the plea submitted through Advocate RN Kachave. He filed the PIL at the high court after receiving no response, according to the petition.
