Wardha: Prime Minister Narendra Modi escalated his attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday, accusing the Congress party of being run by individuals from the ‘tukde tukde gang’ and ‘urban Naxals’—terms often used to describe those allegedly seeking to divide India. The remarks followed Gandhi’s recent statements in the US regarding religious freedom and reservation policies in India.
Speaking at a rally in Wardha, Maharashtra, PM Modi said that Congress leaders were promoting an “anti-national agenda” on foreign soil, expressing concerns over the state of religious freedom and the integrity of Indian society. Without directly naming Rahul Gandhi, the Prime Minister claimed that Congress’s actions insult India’s culture and faith, stating, “The spirit of patriotism has died in today’s Congress, and the ghost of hatred has entered it.”
The Prime Minister’s comments were prompted by Rahul Gandhi’s remarks during his US visit, where he discussed religious freedoms in India and expressed views on reservation policies, which drew sharp criticism from BJP leaders. PM Modi also linked Congress’s actions to an alleged opposition to Ganesh puja, following the backlash he faced for attending a Ganesh puja at Chief Justice DY Chandrachud’s home. “Congress has begun opposing Ganpati puja as part of their appeasement politics,” Modi said, further accusing the party of being irked by the cultural and religious traditions of India.
Gandhi’s comments about scrapping reservations once India becomes a fairer place were also a focal point of criticism. PM Modi and BJP leaders interpreted his remarks as a disregard for the reservation system, although Gandhi later clarified that Congress aimed to expand reservation beyond the 50% cap.
In response to Gandhi’s statement on religious freedom, where he highlighted the rights of Sikhs to wear religious symbols like turbans and kadas, PM Modi accused Congress of undermining India’s cultural unity for political gain. Modi reiterated his stance, emphasizing that Congress’s current leadership was the “most corrupt” in the country and furthering a divisive agenda.
