Singapore: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a significant meeting with Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong today, where both leaders agreed to elevate bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. The talks took place during PM Modi’s two-day visit to Singapore, which was arranged at the invitation of Prime Minister Wong.
Upon his arrival at the Singapore Parliament House, PM Modi received a red-carpet welcome and signed the visitor’s book, setting a positive tone for the discussions that followed.
In a statement after the meeting, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted the progress made: “A new chapter in India-Singapore ties: Comprehensive Strategic Partnership established. PM @narendramodi and PM @LawrenceWongST held a productive meeting in Singapore today.”
The leaders reviewed various aspects of the bilateral relationship, focusing on key areas such as Advanced Manufacturing, Connectivity, Digitalisation, Healthcare & Medicine, Skills Development, and Sustainability. They also oversaw the exchange of four Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to solidify cooperation in these fields.
This meeting marks a new phase in India-Singapore relations, coming just days after Lawrence Wong assumed office as Singapore’s Prime Minister and PM Modi began his third term in office.
Later today, PM Modi is scheduled to meet with Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, as well as Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong. Lee will host a lunch in honor of PM Modi.
PM Modi will also engage with Singaporean business leaders and those involved in the country’s semiconductor ecosystem. As part of his visit, both leaders will tour a semiconductor manufacturing facility, highlighting the importance of this sector to both nations.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Singapore follows his historic trip to Brunei, marking the first bilateral visit by an Indian prime minister to the Southeast Asian nation. Upon his arrival in Singapore, PM Modi was warmly welcomed by the Indian community, reflecting the strong ties between the two countries.
