New Delhi, July 30: A “Meri Mati Mera Desh” campaign will be started in commemoration of the nation’s heroic martyrs in the days leading up to Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated on Sunday.

With “Amrit Mohatsav” echoing throughout the nation and August 15 rapidly approaching, Modi announced in his monthly Mann Ki Baat radio address that the nation is launching a significant campaign called “Meri Mati Mera Desh.”

He said that a campaign would be started to honour the courageous souls who had been martyred and events would be held all over India in memory of those who had given their lives in defence of the nation.

“Special inscriptions will be installed in lakhs of village panchayats of the country in memory of these personalities,” Modi said.

During this campaign, a “Amrit Kalash Yatra” will also be conducted, he stated.

“This ‘Amrit Kalash Yatra’, carrying the soil in 7,500 ‘kalash’ from villages and various corners of the country, will reach Delhi. This yatra will also carry plants from various parts of the country. From 7,500 kalash, soil and plants that will come, an ‘Amrit Vatika’ will be built close to the National War Memorial,” the Prime Minister said.

In his radio broadcast, Modi also praised the adjustments the government made to the Haj programme over the previous several years, noting that more and more people are now able to participate in the yearly pilgrimage.

The Prime Minister noted that over 4,000 women were able to undertake Haj without a “Mehram” or male companion, which he described as a “big change.”

He said that recent Haj pilgrims who were Muslim ladies wrote to him.

“Their Haj was very special as they performed the pilgrimage without ‘Mehram’. Their number is not 50 or 100 but over 4,000. This is a big change,”

Their Haj was exceptional because they made the pilgrimage without a “Mehram.” They number over 4,000 instead of 50 or 100. This is a significant change, Modi stated, noting that Muslim women had previously been not allowed to perform the Haj without a “Mehram.”

“Through Mann ki Baat, I would also like to thank the Saudi Government,” he said.

“The changes made in the Haj policy in the last few years are being appreciated. Our Muslim mothers and sisters have written a lot to me. Now more and more people are getting an opportunity to go for Haj,” the Prime Minister said.

He also discussed a number of artefacts that had lately been returned to India from the US.

The recent days have been troublesome, as a result of natural disasters, he said. “People had to suffer in many places due to many swelled rivers like the Yamuna,” he said.

The potential of group effort has once again been highlighted by the country’s citizens through natural disasters, the Prime Minister remarked.

Modi added that it was inspiring to watch individuals use creative measures to conserve water. He also used the record plantation of 30 crore saplings in a single day in Uttar Pradesh as an illustration of the public’s involvement and awareness.
