Pune: On September 29, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new underground section of the Pune Metro, marking a major milestone in the city’s urban transport development. The train was flagged off via video conferencing from Swargate to the District Court, completing Phase 1 of the Pune Metro Rail Project. The total cost of this underground section is estimated to be ₹1,810 crore.
PM Modi Launches Pune Metro Section
With the launch of the District Court to Swargate metro section, Pune’s connectivity takes a big leap forward. Phase 1 of the project, which covers key areas of the city, aims to reduce traffic congestion and improve public transport efficiency.
Foundation Laid for Swargate-Katraj Metro Extension
The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for the next phase of Pune Metro’s expansion—the Swargate to Katraj extension. The 5.46-kilometer stretch, fully underground, will cost around ₹2,955 crore. It will include new stations at Market Yard, Padmavati, and Katraj, adding another vital route to the metro network.
While addressing the public, PM Modi criticized previous governments for the delays in Pune Metro’s development, emphasizing how his administration has fast-tracked the project. “Earlier, no significant progress was made, and not a single metro pillar was constructed in eight years. Today, we are inaugurating a modern metro station,” he said.
Bidkin Industrial Area Dedicated to the Nation
In a major boost to industrial development, PM Modi inaugurated the Bidkin Industrial Area, a 7,855-acre site under the National Industrial Corridor Development Program. The project is expected to transform the region’s industrial capabilities, offering extensive growth opportunities and job creation.
Solapur Airport Upgrades Inaugurated
In Solapur, Prime Minister Modi also unveiled improvements to the airport terminal, which has been expanded to handle 4.1 lakh passengers per year. He emphasized that these upgrades would significantly benefit pilgrims traveling to visit the nearby Lord Vitthal temple.
Memorial for Savitribai Phule’s First Girls’ School
As part of his visit, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for a memorial at Bhidewada, where Savitribai Phule established India’s first school for girls. This initiative honors Phule’s pivotal role in women’s education and empowerment.
