Athens, August 25: As part of efforts to improve bilateral ties, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Greece on Friday. Modi travelled to the Greek capital from South Africa where he attended the 15th BRICS Summit and conducted bilateral meetings with a number of international leaders to further strengthen India’s ties with those nations.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Prime Minister of Greece, invited Modi to visit.
“I have the honour to be the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Greece after 40 years,” Modi said.
The last high-level visit to Greece was made by the then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in September 1983.
Civilizational relationships between India and Greece have become stronger in recent years as a result of collaboration in fields including maritime transportation, defence, trade and investments and interpersonal relations.
To discuss how to further strengthen the partnership, Prime Minister Modi will speak with Prime Minister Mitsotakis. A meeting with President Katerina Sakellaropoulou is also anticipated.
Throughout his day-long tour, he will also speak with business executives from both nations as well as the Indian community in Greece.
“PM @narendramodi sets foot in the historic city of Athens for his first-ever visit to Greece. Warmly greeted by FM George Gerapetritis at the airport,” Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
