New Delhi, Oct.30: As part of his Rome visit for the G20 Summit on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had his first ever one-on-one encounter with Pope Francis as he landed in Vatican City. COVID-19, general world perspectives, and maintaining peace and serenity were among the topics that were covered in their meeting.
PM Modi is the seventh Indian Prime Minister to pay a visit to the Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, the world’s largest religious denomination. On the invitation of Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, he is visiting the Vatican City from October 29 to 31.
He was accompanied by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar to meet the Pope.
Prime Minister Modi has a packed week ahead of him, including high-profile meetings at the G20 summit in Italy and the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, Scotland. On the first two days of November, he will be in Glasgow.
He met with his Italian counterpart Mario Draghi yesterday, and the two leaders discussed bilateral and mutual problems. PM Modi was welcomed by Draghi at Palazzo Chigi for their first face-to-face encounter after arriving in Italy earlier in the day. He was also given a guard of honor.
