New Delhi, Jan 24: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid tribute to Shiv Sena founder Bala Shaheb Thackeray on his 97th birth anniversary.

PM Modi said that he would always cherish his interactions with the Maratha leader, who was one of the early pioneers of hardline Hindutva politics and enjoyed a large following. He further added saying that Thackeray devoted his life to public welfare.

The PM tweeted, “Remembering Balasaheb Thackeray Ji on his birth anniversary. I will always cherish my various interactions with him. He was blessed with rich knowledge and wit. He devoted his life to public welfare.”

The Shiv Sena, which was founded in 1966 by Bal Thackeray recently busted into two factions, one commanding the support of a majority of its lawmakers siding with the BJP, while another headed by Thackeray’s son Uddhav Thackeray aligned with the Opposition in Maharashtra.

On the other hand, Uddhav Thackeray shared a picture with his father and son Aditya. In the other tweet, he hailed Bal Thackeray as “the great hero of millions of Shiv Sainiks.”
