New Delhi, Aug 14: Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to all those who died during partition on Sunday, and praised the resilience and grit of those who suffered during that tragic period of history.

Prime Minister Modi declared last year that August 14 would be observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day to commemorate people’s struggles and sacrifices.

“Today, on Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, I pay homage to all those who lost their lives during Partition, and applaud the resilience as well as grit of all those who suffered during that tragic period of our history,” PM Modi said in a tweet.

BJP president J P Nadda and Defence minister Rajnath Singh also paid their tribute.

“We must never forget how politics of selfishness & personal interests led to Partition and pain,” J P Nadda said in a tweet.

Notably, Pakistan was formed as a separate country following the British division of India in 1947. Millions of people were displaced, and many thousands were killed in the ensuing communal violence.
