New Delhi, Dec 18: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Meghalaya and Tripura on Sunday to inaugurate a slew of projects worth over 6,800 crores for the northeast.
The projects cover a wide range of sectors such as housing, road, agriculture, telecom, IT, tourism and hospitality.
PM Modi will also take part in the golden jubilee celebration of the North East Council (NEC), a regional planning body for 8 northeastern states, including Sikkim. Apart from this, he will launch the ‘Grih Pravesh’ programme for over 200,000 beneficiaries under ‘Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana or PMAY – urban and rural – schemes in Agartala.
The members of the NEC, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, other central ministers and lawmakers of the northeast, will attend the programme.
PM Modi will release a commemorative journal chronicling NEC’s contribution towards the development of the Northeast region over the last fifty years, a senior official said. He will later address a public meeting at the Polo Grounds here.
The official said that around 10,000 people are expected to attend the public meeting also the venue where the PM is set to address the rally has been declared a ‘drone-free zone’. Security has been tightened in the anticipation of PM’s visit to the northeastern states, where polls are due early next year.
The BJP is shifting its focus to poll-bound Tripura and Meghalaya after Gujarat where elections were held recently. Both Tripura and Meghalaya will go to polls in the next two months and are being seen as crucial elections for the BJP.
