New Delhi, April 28: In an effort to improve FM radio connectivity in border regions and aspirational districts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday virtually inaugurated 91 FM transmitters scattered across 18 states and two union territories.

A total of two crore more individuals who did not previously have access to the medium will benefit from the enhanced coverage of around 35,000 sq km that will result from the installation of these new transmitters in 84 districts.

“These FM transmitters will play a key role in a range of services be it timely dissemination of information, weather forecast for agriculture or connecting the women self-help groups with new markets,” PM Modi said.

He claimed that the nation’s technological development gave radio a new face and attracted new listeners. The government, according to the prime minister, is always attempting to democratise technology.

The expansion happens two days before Mann ki Baat, the prime minister’s monthly radio show, airs its historic 100th episode.

With a particular focus on improving coverage in Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Ladakh, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, 91 new 100 W FM transmitters have been installed in 84 districts.

Speaking on occasion, Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Anurag Thakur said, “This is a historic move. This will be very helpful in transmitting information related to entertainment, sports, and farming to the local people. Mann Ki Baat increased the popularity of radio.”
