New Delhi, Dec 30: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday virtually flagged off the Vande Bharat express connecting Bengal’s Howrah and New Jalpaiguri in the presence of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

“I was supposed to come to West Bengal but due to personal reasons, I could not come there. I seek apologies from the people of Bengal: PM Modi during the inauguration event of Railway projects that was attended by him virtually.
“Central government is making record investment to modernise Indian Railways. Now modern trains like Vande Bharat express, Tejas express, Humsafar express are being made in India. In next 8 years, we will see railwthe ays on a new journey of modernization,” he added.
Governor CV Ananda Bose and Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw were also present. Howrah and New Jalpaiguri, the entry point to the northeast, will be connected by the Vande Bharat Express.
According to officials, the blue-and-white train will save three hours of travel time compared to other trains on the route because it travels 564 kilometres in 7.45 hours. There will be three stops along the way in Bolpur, Malda, and Barsoi. There are 16 coaches on the cutting-edge train, including two for the drivers.
