New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a three-day visit to the United States on Saturday, September 21, with a packed agenda that includes participation in major international summits and bilateral discussions. The visit will see PM Modi attending the Quad Leaders’ Summit in Wilmington and the Summit of the Future (SOTF) at the United Nations in New York, with the possibility of meetings with key global figures, including former US President Donald Trump.

Highlights of PM Modi’s Itinerary

  1. Quad Summit in Wilmington (Sept 21)
PM Modi’s first stop will be Wilmington, Delaware, where he will join US President Joe Biden, along with leaders of Japan and Australia, for the fourth in-person Quad Leaders’ Summit. The leaders will assess the progress made over the last year and set a fresh agenda focusing on key issues such as the Indo-Pacific region and global strategic partnerships.
  2. Bilateral Talks with Global Leaders
On the sidelines of the Quad Summit, PM Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with key leaders, including US President Biden. The discussions are expected to cover areas like the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF), and agreements related to India’s drug policy. Talks with leaders of Japan and Australia are also expected, reinforcing the Quad’s commitment to regional security and development.
  3. Cancer Moonshot Initiative
A notable event during the Quad Summit will be the “Cancer Moonshot” initiative, a collaborative effort to combat cancer by reducing its burden across the Indo-Pacific region. PM Modi and other Quad leaders will focus on innovative strategies to prevent and treat cancer, with a particular focus on cervical cancer.
  4. Summit of the Future at the UN (Sept 23)
Following the Quad Summit, PM Modi will travel to New York to attend the Summit of the Future at the United Nations General Assembly. During his address, the Prime Minister will focus on global challenges, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and gaps in global governance. The event will see participation from several world leaders, addressing pressing global issues.
  5. Interaction with Indian Diaspora
On September 22, PM Modi will engage with the Indian diaspora in New York, followed by a roundtable discussion with prominent technology CEOs to explore investment opportunities in India’s growing tech sector.
  6. Summit of the Future Address (Sept 23)
PM Modi will deliver his keynote speech at the Summit of the Future in the UN General Assembly, emphasizing India’s stance on global issues and progress on the SDGs.
  7. Possible Meeting with Donald Trump
While there is no official confirmation yet, reports suggest that PM Modi may meet former US President Donald Trump during his visit. However, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has stated that they are still working to finalize meetings based on the time available.

Expectations and Outcomes

The Ministry of External Affairs has indicated that several key outcomes are expected from PM Modi’s visit, including a Quad joint statement, a fact sheet on the Indo-Pacific partnership, and details on the Cancer Moonshot initiative.

As the visit coincides with US President Biden’s final Quad meeting and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s involvement, it also holds significance as a transitional moment for the Quad leadership.
