Warsaw: On the eve of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s anticipated visit to conflict-ridden Ukraine, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk underscored India’s potential to play a crucial and constructive role in resolving the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. During a joint press conference in Warsaw, PM Tusk lauded PM Modi’s upcoming visit as “historic” and highlighted India’s commitment to peace and diplomacy.
Speaking alongside PM Modi, PM Tusk stated, “We began by addressing some very emotional issues. PM Modi has confirmed his willingness to support a peaceful, rightful, and immediate end to the war. We believe that India can play an essential and very constructive role in this matter. PM, in just a few hours, you will visit Ukraine. We consider your visit to Ukraine to be historic.”
Prime Minister Modi reiterated India’s firm stance that conflicts cannot be resolved through violence and battlefield confrontations. He emphasized India’s readiness to assist in restoring peace and stability in the region. “The ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia are a matter of deep concern for all of us. India firmly believes that no problem can be solved on the battlefield,” PM Modi said after comprehensive talks with his Polish counterpart.
He further expressed sorrow over the loss of innocent lives in these crises, stressing that the entire world must address this challenge collectively. “We support dialogue and diplomacy for the early restoration of peace and stability,” PM Modi added.
PM Modi’s visit to Poland coincides with the 70th anniversary of the establishment of strategic ties between India and Poland. This visit marks the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Poland in nearly 50 years.
In the second leg of his two-nation tour, PM Modi is scheduled to visit Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine, where he will spend approximately seven hours on Friday. He is set to depart for Kyiv later this evening, with the journey expected to take around 10 hours by train. This visit will be the first-ever by an Indian Prime Minister to Ukraine, underscoring the significance of India’s role in global diplomacy and conflict resolution.
