Daltonganj, Nov.16: Town police have busted a small but determined network of opium smugglers who were  set to send a consignment from Daltonganj to Delhi soon.

The interception and recovery of the opium were done on the Panki Daltonganj road. A team of 13 cops led by Ramjeet Singh and R S Rana seized the opium and arrested the accused.

The 6 have been remanded in judicial custody on Monday.

Sources said a 5 month long WhatsApp chat between two people who are related to each other, indicated smuggling of opium from here to Delhi.

Additional superintendent of police, K Vijay Shankar said, “After getting a tip-off, our police acted quite precisely and got the two prime smugglers with a consignment of 4.5 kilograms of opium.”

These two smugglers later disclosed the names of other four small peddlers who were also caught by the police. 400 grams of the opium were recovered from them.

A K Mahatha, officer in-charge of the town police station, said that a total of 4.900 kg (four kilo and nine hundred grams) of opium was recovered and all six smugglers and peddlers were arrested including the two major consignors Dilip and Surender.

Police also recovered a sum of Rs.7, 370 along with 6 cell phones. One bike was also seized on which the prime smugglers Dilip and Surender were riding.

Sources informed that the WhatsApp chat of the last five months, which mentions opium, will be incorporated in the case investigation.
