New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been named in a police case following allegations of injuring two BJP MPs during a protest outside Parliament on Thursday. BJP leaders Pratap Sarangi and Mukesh Rajput, one of whom is 69 years old, are currently hospitalised with injuries allegedly sustained in the scuffle.
Charges Against Rahul Gandhi
The case was filed under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita, including voluntarily causing grievous hurt, endangering life or personal safety, use of criminal force, criminal intimidation, and common intention. BJP leaders have also accused him of attempting to murder.
Former Union Minister Anurag Thakur, along with MPs Bansuri Swaraj and Hemang Joshi, lodged the complaint. Mr Thakur claimed Rahul Gandhi assaulted BJP MPs during a peaceful protest.
“We have filed a complaint against Rahul Gandhi for assault and provocation, detailing how he injured our MPs during a peaceful protest outside Makar Dwar,” Mr Thakur said.
BJP MPs’ Allegations
BJP MP Pratap Sarangi alleged that Rahul Gandhi pushed Mukesh Rajput, who then fell on him, resulting in his injury.
“Rahul Gandhi pushed a fellow MP who fell on me, causing me to fall. I was near the stairs when the incident occurred,” Mr Sarangi stated.
BJP leaders have labelled Rahul Gandhi’s actions as “hooliganism” and accused him of disrupting the protest.
Rahul Gandhi Denies Allegations
Rahul Gandhi has denied the accusations, calling them a diversionary tactic to shift attention away from Home Minister Amit Shah’s controversial remarks on Dr BR Ambedkar.
“This is an attempt to deflect focus from key issues like Adani and the insult to Ambedkar. BJP MPs were blocking my way, and they initiated the scuffle,” Mr Gandhi told reporters.
Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge also accused BJP MPs of assaulting him during the incident, claiming injuries to his legs.
Further Complaints Filed
Nagaland BJP MP Phangnon Konyak alleged that Rahul Gandhi shouted at her during the protest, describing his behaviour as “unbecoming of a Leader of the Opposition.”
“It was a peaceful protest, but Rahul Gandhi confronted me aggressively and accused us of blocking him, which was untrue,” she told reporters, confirming that she has filed a complaint with the Rajya Sabha chairman.
