New Delhi, Feb 16: An FIR has been filed against an unknown driver for his suspected role in the death of prominent Punjabi actor Deep Sidhu in a car accident.

Sonipat police registered an FIR against a truck driver based on Deep Sidhu’s brother Surjeet’s complaint. The FIR was filed under sections 279 (rash driving) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

On Wednesday, February 16,  Deep Sidhu’s relatives and supporters arrived at Sonipat Civil Hospital. Outside the hospital, police officers were stationed to maintain the security of the area.

The post-mortem was set to begin at 10 a.m . today. The post-mortem will be conducted by a team of three doctors from the Sonipat government hospital, including Dr. Pankaj Keswani, Dr. Bhanu, and Dr. Rajesh Singh.

His remains will be transported to Ludhiana following the post-mortem. The Ghuman Estate in Ludhiana will host his final rites.

Deep Sidhu, an actor-turned-activist, died in an automobile accident on the Kundli-Manesar-Palwal expressway in Haryana’s Sonipat district on Tuesday.

When the incident occurred near Pipli toll plaza in Kharkhoda, the 37-year-old actor was claimed to be travelling from Delhi to Punjab. When the collision occurred, he was at the wheel of a white Scorpio. He was travelling with Reena Rai, a close friend who was unharmed in the tragedy.

Deep Sidhu, a 37-year-old barrister-turned-model, actor, and farmer activist, was born on April 2, 1984. He was from Punjab’s Muktsar Sahib area.

He began his career as a model and was cast in his first film, Ramta Jogi, in 2015, which was produced by actor Dharmendra’s Vijeta Films. He had worked in eight Punjabi movies.

Sidhu rose to prominence after footage of him speaking English in support of the farmers’ agitation went popular on social media.

He was suspected of being the main conspirator in the violence that erupted during a protesting farmer’s tractor march on Republic Day in 2021. He was also charged by the police with inciting chaos at Red Fort.

Deep Sidhu was arrested on February 9, 2021, however after spending 70 days in police detention, he was freed on bail on April 17, 2021.
