Jamshedpur, July 27: A team of police officials from RIT Thana which had gone to Bagmundi in neighbouring Bengal’s Purulia district in a sequel to the investigation into a murder case was attacked by locals in the intervening night of Wednesday.
As a result of the attack, four police officials, including the OC, RIT thana Sagarlal Mahatha were injured, some of them seriously.
The injured cops are presently admitted at a local hospital in Purulia for treatment.
Led by Mahatha, the police team had gone to Bagmundi in connection with the murder of Tilak Mahto whose bullet-riddled body was found near a railway tunnel under the RIT thana area in Adityapur on July 24 morning.
The police team had reached Kudeng village under Bagmundi thana area on the information that the murder suspect Vikash Kumar Mahto was hiding there.
Though the suspect was a resident of some other place, he had taken refuge at the house of one Baidhnath Mahto. As the police team reached the house and started talking with Baidhnath, a mob of about 25 men swooped over the policemen and injured them all.
According to police, Vikash Mahto who was hiding at the house had managed to escape taking advantage of the commotion caused by the mob attack.
In this connection, the Bagmundi police have registered a case against the attackers on the statement made by the RIT thana OC, Sagarlal Mahatha.
