Kadapa: A fierce political battle has erupted in Kadapa, Andhra Pradesh, between the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and the opposition YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) over the newly introduced “garbage tax” in the state. The dispute, dubbed the “garbage wars,” has escalated into public protests and retaliatory actions between the two rival parties.

The conflict intensified when TDP supporters and local residents, angered by the new tax, piled up garbage bags outside the official residence of YSRCP Mayor Suresh Babu. The protests were triggered by the mayor’s insistence that garbage would only be collected if residents paid the newly implemented garbage tax. In response, TDP MLA Medhavi Reddy urged residents to resist paying the tax, leading to the accumulation of uncollected trash across Kadapa.

When authorities failed to collect the garbage, frustrated residents and TDP members took matters into their own hands by dumping trash outside the mayor’s residence. The situation quickly drew the attention of local police, who arrived at the scene to manage the unrest.

The YSRCP was swift in its retaliation, with party workers and activists staging protests at the Chinna Chowk police station, demanding the arrest of TDP leaders, including MLA Medhavi Reddy, for their role in the garbage dumping incident.

The dispute between MLA Medhavi Reddy and Mayor Suresh Babu has been brewing for days, with both sides trading accusations over the garbage tax issue. Reddy, during a local press conference, accused the YSRCP of engaging in “dirty politics” to create obstacles in garbage collection and inconvenience residents. She further alleged that Mayor Babu was intentionally causing disruptions to tarnish the image of the ruling TDP.

In response, Mayor Suresh Babu lashed out at Reddy and her party, accusing them of exploiting the garbage tax issue for political gain. His statements further inflamed tensions, leading to the retaliatory action by TDP workers, who dumped trash outside Babu’s house on Tuesday morning.

As tensions continue to rise, the garbage tax issue has become a flashpoint for the ongoing political rivalry between the TDP and YSRCP in Kadapa. The opposition is now demanding the arrest of Medhavi Reddy and her supporters for their involvement in the protests, while the TDP remains defiant, warning of further actions if the garbage collection issue is not promptly resolved.
