New Delhi: The Election Commission of India has rescheduled the polling date for by-elections across 14 Assembly constituencies in Kerala, Punjab, and Uttar Pradesh from November 13 to November 20. This change follows requests from multiple political parties, which cited several festivals – including Kalpathi Ratholsavam, Kartik Purnima, and the Prakash Parv of Guru Nanak Dev – that fall in mid-November and could impact voter turnout.
Polling and Counting Schedule
According to the new schedule, voters in these states will now head to the polls on November 20, with vote counting set for November 23. The change in polling dates affects nine Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh, four in Punjab, and one in Kerala.
Election Commission’s Decision
In response to the requests, the poll panel emphasized the importance of accommodating significant cultural and religious engagements. This change aims to ensure voter convenience and maximize turnout. The Commission has a history of adjusting election dates to avoid overlap with major festivals, prioritizing accessibility for all citizens.
Seats Affected in Kerala, Punjab, and UP
Key Assembly seats involved in the upcoming bypolls include Kerala’s Palakkad, Punjab’s Dera Baba Nanak, Chabbewal, Gidderbaha, and Barnala, and UP’s Meerapur, Kundarki, Ghaziabad, Khair, Karhal, Sishamau, Phulpur, Katehari, and Majhawan. Additionally, by-elections will be held for two vacant Lok Sabha seats in Nanded and Wayanad. Most of these bypolls are a result of MLAs vacating seats after winning Lok Sabha elections.
