US Plans Hormuz Blockade: How Washington Wants to Control Key Oil Route

Washington: US President Donald Trump has announced plans to blockade maritime traffic linked to Iranian ports in the Strait of Hormuz, escalating tensions around one of the world’s most important energy corridors.

What the Blockade Means

The proposed move does not appear to shut the entire strait for all countries. Instead, US Central Command said vessels entering or leaving Iranian ports and coastal areas would be targeted for enforcement measures, while ships traveling between non-Iranian ports may still be allowed passage.

This would effectively tighten economic pressure on Tehran rather than fully closing global shipping lanes.

How It Could Be Enforced

Under wartime maritime rules, naval forces can conduct “visit and search” operations. That means ships passing through the area could be stopped, inspected, and cleared or denied transit depending on cargo, destination, or links to Iran.

In practice, this could involve US warships monitoring traffic, boarding suspect vessels, and controlling movement through the narrow waterway.

Why Hormuz Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint through which roughly one-fifth of global seaborne oil and gas trade passes. Any disruption there can quickly affect fuel prices, shipping insurance, and world markets.

Why the US Is Targeting Iran

Analysts say the aim is to reduce Iran’s oil exports and revenue, weakening its ability to sustain military operations over time. Oil sales are a major source of funds for Tehran, making maritime trade a strategic pressure point.

Risks for Global Markets

Even a partial blockade can raise global oil prices. Reports said crude prices jumped after the announcement, reflecting fears of tighter supply and prolonged instability in the region.

Higher energy costs could affect transport, inflation, and consumers worldwide.

Iran Responds Defiantly

Iranian officials signaled they are not backing down. Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned Americans to expect higher fuel prices if the blockade proceeds.
