New Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra addressed a public meeting in Kerala’s Wayanad on Tuesday, marking a significant moment in her political career. After 35 years of campaigning for others, Priyanka Gandhi is now seeking support for herself in the upcoming bypoll on the Wayanad parliamentary seat.
“I was 17 when I campaigned for my father (former PM Rajiv Gandhi). Then I campaigned for my mother, brother, and many of my colleagues. For 35 years, I have been campaigning in different elections, but this is the first time I am campaigning in an election and seeking your support for myself. It is a very different feeling,” she said. Priyanka Gandhi expressed gratitude to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge for the opportunity, saying, “It’s my honor to represent you if you give me a chance.”
The Wayanad seat, previously held by Rahul Gandhi, was vacated after he retained Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh. This bypoll gives Priyanka Gandhi the chance to officially enter electoral politics.
Addressing Wayanad’s Tragedy
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra recalled her visit to Wayanad during the devastating landslides that claimed hundreds of lives and displaced thousands. She emotionally shared her experience, saying, “I saw the devastation with my own eyes. I met children who lost their families, mothers who lost their children, and people whose lives were completely washed away. Despite this, each person I met was helping each other with courage and compassion.”
Rahul Gandhi’s Support And Kharge’s Appeal
Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, accompanied his sister and expressed his deep connection with Wayanad. “What Wayanad has done for me cannot be described in words. Wayanad will have an official MP and an unofficial MP in Lok Sabha, and they will both raise your issues,” he said.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge lauded Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as a strong leader and appealed to the people of Wayanad to trust her with their vote.
Wayanad’s Key Bypoll
The Wayanad bypoll is scheduled for November 13, with the results expected on November 23, alongside the assembly poll outcomes in Maharashtra and Jharkhand.
