Chandigarh, April 1: The Punjab Assembly unanimously passed an official resolution reiterating the state’s claim on Chandigarh in a special session Friday, just days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced that employees of Chandigarh will be subject to the Central Service Rules rather than the Punjab Service Rules.
In the absence of BJP members who had earlier opposed the resolution and staged a walkout, the motion was carried by voice vote.
“I guarantee the people of the state that I will fight for the rights of the state, seek appointment with the Prime Minister and take up the issue with him,” said the newly-inducted Punjab Chief Minister, Bhagwant Mann, while addressing the House.
The resolution was backed by members of the AAP, Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal, and Bahujan Samaj Party, however it was opposed by BJP member Ashwini Sharma. He claimed that the resolution is intended to deceive the state’s innocent citizens in order to cover up for past governments’ failures.
He questioned what the Centre had done to breach the Reorganization Act’s stipulations.
