Jamshedpur, April 1: As part of its commitment to biological diversity, Tata Steel today inaugurated a pond at CRM Bara Area in Sidhgora.
Chanakya Chaudhary, vice-president (Corporate Services) Tata Steel along with other senior officials of the company were present on the occasion.
Tata Steel has embarked on a journey with a master plan to rejuvenate near-extinct water bodies in the city as part of its sustainability targets and commitment towards reduction in freshwater consumption.
The development of five ponds at CRM Bara was envisaged in the year 2019. This is the fifth pond.
Chanakya Chaudhary said, “The new facility is synonymous with sustainability, greenery and biodiversity. The newly built pond will not only aid in rainwater harvesting but will also recharge the groundwater table. This particular initiative is a testimony to the fact that manufacturing units can co-exist in an eco-friendly environment.”
With the completion of Pond -5, the biggest among all water bodies at CRM Bara, the comprehensive water storage capacity in CRM Bara has now become 220 ML, with a total of 32-acres of land developed as water bodies.
This project serves multiple purposes of rainwater harvesting, collection and storage of surface run-off rainwater and treated water from CRM Bara as well as recharging groundwater and enhancing the natural beauty of the area.
Apart from the water bodies, a total of 19-acres of the area have been landscaped and utilised as green cover with plantation of about 6000 trees, enriching the biodiversity of the region.
On August 26, 2021, Tata Steel inaugurated the new rainwater harvesting pond followed by the groundbreaking of the rejuvenation of existing water bodies at the CRM Bara complex.
It resulted in the creation of a larger rainwater harvesting facility, improvement in the water table of the local area and an increase in biological diversity.
Notably, Tata Steel is the first corporate in India to launch its Biodiversity Policy in 2016.
The policy provides guidelines for including biodiversity in every strategic and operational decision making. Tata Steel is striving toward building a sustainable tomorrow that respects all forms of life.
On August 27, 2020, Tata Steel had rejuvenated the CRM Bara Pond, which was virtually inaugurated by T V Narendran, CEO and MD, Tata Steel.
